i’m not sure where you are from christine (i’m guessing australia) — but at delis in new york, people drink bad coffee. they insist on it. new yorkers don’t like good coffee. in fact i think they might be afraid of it. we’re talking a majority including thinking, rational people here. i work at a store with a cafe that brews excellent coffee; and the employees will leave the store to buy lousy coffee at a deli. if perchance you brew good coffee and offer it to them for free, they will nervously turn you down or make some excuse or other. bad coffee is a great comfort to new yorkers. i myself rely on it in the early morning before work (i have no choice, no good coffee is available from any deli) but pride myself on it as a true hallmark of life here.
